Holiday Recipe: Mulled Wine MocktailHoliday Recipe: Mulled Wine Mocktail

Spice up your holiday season with this warm and comforting drink. Made with pomegranate juice and spiced with cinnamon, cloves and orange, this delicious mocktail is paleo, vegan and alcohol-free.

“It’s quite simple and can be put together in a crock pot or simmered on the stove,” says Sue Hazeghazam, RD, LDN, Director of Clinical Nutrition for Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital. “I made it this weekend for family with three cups of apple cider and three cups unsweetened pomegranate and then omitted the sugar (because I didn’t have coconut sugar on hand). It fills the house with a nice, fruity and spicy aroma.”

Yield: 4 to 5 servings

Ingredients

  • 6 cups unsweetened pomegranate juice
  • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 large orange
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 tablespoons maple or coconut sugar (adjust according to taste)

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients to a pot or crock pot and bring to a very low boil on medium-high heat.
  2. Turn heat to low and allow to simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. If you have more time, feel free to leave it for up to an hour.
  3. Strain liquid and taste, adding maple or coconut sugar by the tablespoon, as desired.
  4. Garnish with fresh orange slices and cinnamon sticks, if desired.
