What’s Your Summer Scrubs Style?
Straight leg, wide leg or joggers? Tucked in or no tuck? Bright colors or patterns?
Over the past few weeks, we visited with nurses and medical staff across the Cape Cod Healthcare system to get a pulse on the scrubs fashion scene.
We discovered team members share a common thread—they take pride in expressing themselves head to toe with bold and bright scrubs, whimsical patterns with llamas, leopard prints or ice cream cones, and unique headbands. Several even add a pop of personality to their favorite pair of Crocs with charms such as butterflies, brightly colored gems and hearts.
“During Covid, we were gowned up all the time, so it didn’t really matter what we looked like,” says Pam Morrison, Clinical Leader on South 2, who is wearing scrubs in a bold, bright purple. “But now that we don’t have many Covid patients or isolation patients, we can express ourselves.”
Scrubs today feature many options—plenty of chest pockets and side pant pockets, mock or V-neck styles, wide legs and curved hems. They are lightweight, breathable and antiwrinkle—and feature vibrant colors such as lavender dew, hibiscus, pop red and shocking pink. A quick survey among staff of popular brand names include Figs, Skechers, Grey’s Anatomy—and even Betsey Johnson.
“I lay out scrubs the night before,” says Sarah Mandy, RN, on South 2, who admits to owning about 13 pairs. Sarah, who is 20 weeks pregnant, says she also appreciates the stretch material and loves the variety of colors. “I get excited about what color I am going to wear,” says Sarah. “Is that weird?” she asks, sharing a laugh with her coworkers.
“On Sunday, I lay mine out for the workweek,” says Pam. “I have orange, bright green, hot pink and turquoise.”
Amanda Rich, RN on South 2, says she owns mostly joggers because they look better with sneakers. “I have jumpsuits, too, with lots of pockets.”
In addition to looking fashionable, modern scrubs add a sense of fun and playfulness and even help patients identify staff. “You’re always easy to spot,” says Sarah. “If a patient walks by, they know the color you are wearing.”
