
STARS in the Spotlight
Since launching in the new year, EMPOWERMENTU programs have helped cultivate an exceptional work experience and create a more positive workplace environment. To give us an update on the new initiatives and see how things are going, we checked in with Bridget Torres, Organizational and Professional Development Consultant for Cape Cod Healthcare, for an overview of the STAR Team Member Recognition Program, the Rising STAR New Team Member Employee Orientation Sessions and the STAR Leadership Academy.

STAR Team Member Recognition Program

The first organization-wide employee recognition program launched in March with a committee of 10 staff members reviewing nominations. Each month, five outstanding team members across the Cape Cod Healthcare system are recognized for going above and beyond in their roles, and demonstrating their commitment to STAR core values of Service, Teamwork, Accountability and Respect.
To date, there have been 312 team members nominated and 25 winners announced via TV screens and screensavers, the Intranet and social media posts. Seventy team members received the top nominee award presented by managers at huddles and team meetings.
“The level of enthusiasm the committee has observed during the award presentations has far exceeded what we ever expected,” says Bridget Torres. “Teammates have consistently attended with high levels of enthusiasm and even patients joined in on celebrations. The experience reminds us all how we are not only a provider of choice, but we can also be an employer of choice as well.”
This fall, the HR team plans to relaunch the Road Shows, visiting Team Members system-wide to help spread the word about the nomination process and hand out special treats as a way to say thank you for everything you do, day in and day out.

Managing for Success Leadership Academy
As part of Cape Cod Healthcare’s 2023 EMPOWERMENTU workforce initiative to develop, support and celebrate our staff, CCHC Managing for Success workshops wrapped up in May and additional workshops are scheduled in October and November. This is the first of many in-person workshops within the Leadership Academy. Evaluations resulted in an overall score of 94 percent of managers indicating the workshop exceeded their expectations. Many agreed the program was a wonderful way to learn and grow as a manager and set the stage to put practical applications and improved practices into place. Upon completion of the workshop, attendees were given access to an online Manager Toolbox filled with tangible resources for communicating with confidence.
In June, the Leadership Learning Series launched, offering e-learning curriculums that build upon the classroom workshops and meet the needs of training requested by our management population. This learning provides easy online courses that average no more than 10 minutes, for more digestible nuggets.
CCHC Rising Stars—New Employee Orientation
The newly reimagined onboarding experience kicked off on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, at the Lorusso Boardroom at Cape Cod Hospital. Many of the new employees shared a common story—they were seeking a career change and a supportive work culture. Most recently, a new feature was added to the workshops to engage new team members – a raffle for a Staycation prize (a $1,000 credit at Chatham Bars Inn). Every 90 days one of the 15 Star Award Winners will be selected in drawing and a new team member will select the name.
To date, 412 new employees have gone through in-person orientation, with another 447 scheduled so far through November.
Future Initiatives
Monthly Leadership Development Series will be continued to be offered with learning to support requests from people managers. Don’t miss the series that will be launch September and October to support conducting successful annual performance reviews.
Coming this Fall:
- The next in-person workshops will be held to bring together all people managers to share best practices, work through challenges, and develop leadership skills.
- Team Member Professional Development Learning Series are coming soon offering learning to all members of the Cape Cod Healthcare Team.
