Security Team to the Rescue
Two CCHC security officers demonstrate quick thinking and swift action in a critical situation.
Healthcare security officers play a vital role in ensuring the safety of patients, staff and visitors within healthcare facilities. They respond to emergencies, manage security threats and assist during medical crises, all while maintaining a secure environment that allows healthcare professionals to focus on patient care. Their quick thinking and commitment help safeguard both physical and emotional well-being, making them an essential part of the healthcare team.
One recent example of their critical role in action occurred on Sunday, March 2, 2025, when two Cape Cod Healthcare security officers demonstrated exceptional vigilance and quick thinking during a medical emergency outside the Emergency Center at Cape Cod Hospital. Their swift response helped prevent what could have been a tragic situation, showcasing the essential impact of healthcare security officers in maintaining safety and supporting patient care.
At the day/evening shift change, Craig Bayer, Manager of Security Operations at Cape Cod Healthcare, recognized healthcare security excellence recently demonstrated by two team members. It was his pleasure to read the following citation:
On Sunday March 2, 2025, a male patient had left the Emergency Center at Cape Cod Hospital against medical advice. While he was leaving the area, Security Officer Delmar Rowe took notice. Officer Rowe made observations about the patient’s behavior which raised concerns that the patient may be confused or in some state of distress.
Officer Rowe then initiated contact and attempted to assist the patient as he was walking out of the building. On the sidewalk, Officer Rowe, then joined by Security Officer Steven Lilly, continued a dialogue with the patient to determine how they could best assist him with a safe departure.
During the interaction, Officer Rowe noticed a rapid change to the patient’s physical and verbal presentation. Suddenly, the patient lost consciousness and began to fall in a face forward direction—toward the cement sidewalk. Acting incredibly fast, Officer Rowe caught the patient mid-fall and then safely guided him to the ground. Officer Rowe continued to aid by protecting the head of this individual as he went into a seizure-like state. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Officer Lilly rapidly activated the emergency response process and medical assistance arrived in a matter of seconds, followed by a Code Blue activation.
Please join me in acknowledging the superior performance by Security Officers Delmar Rowe and Steven Lilly who demonstrated remarkable presence of mind and swift response in rendering assistance to an individual suffering a medical crisis on the exterior of Cape Cod Hospital.
Their quick actions and dedication to patient safety are a true testament to the essential role that healthcare security officers play in ensuring the well-being of everyone in our care.
