Miles and Smiles: Falmouth Road Race

Cape Cod Healthcare team members hit the course, cheered on thousands of runners and provided medical care at the 54th annual race.

From the starting line to the medical tents and Falmouth Hospital Emergency Center, Cape Cod Healthcare was well represented at this year’s Falmouth Road Race.

Team members took on the iconic seven-mile course on August 16, while others volunteered behind the scenes to help keep thousands of runners safe. Among them were longtime race medical volunteers Adam and Colleen Pierce, co-captains of the Mariner’s Point Medical Tent, along with members of the Falmouth Hospital Emergency Center team who cared for runners needing additional treatment.

Favorable weather helped make for a relatively smooth day in the Emergency Center. “It’s quite a large event and thankfully yesterday was not as chaotic as we expected,” said Caylin Whitney, BSN, RN, nurse manager of Falmouth Hospital Emergency Services.

For several Cape Cod Healthcare runners, the day carried special meaning. Molly Gundlach, BSN, RN, CWON, supervisor of Quality & Patient Safety, completed her fifth Falmouth Road Race nearly a year after undergoing hip surgery.

“Almost one year ago, I had hip surgery—shout-out to Dr. Remia—to fix a labral tear,” said Gundlach. “So getting back to running the FRR without any pain was pretty exciting!”

Lorenzo Pizarro of Information Technology Services returned to the race eight years after first running it when he relocated to New England. And Christina Seymour, RN, of Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Services, completed the race for the eighth time.

“It’s such great bonding time every year with my ER team,” said Seymour.
