MACC’s Clinical Summit: Innovation and Access
The annual summit highlighted new technology, teamwork and patient advocacy to enhance access and care across MACC practices.
Earlier this month, clinical teams from across Medical Affiliates of Cape Cod (MACC) practices came together for the annual Clinical Summit at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in Yarmouth — a day focused on innovation, advocacy and access to care.
“The summit is a powerful way to come together as a community,” said Elizabeth Dunton, NP, Vice President of Physician Enterprise. “It reflects the strength, innovation and compassion that define our MACC teams.”
The event underscored Cape Cod Healthcare’s investment in clinical excellence, technology and professional development, and centered on the MACC C.A.N. Initiative — Communication, Advocacy, Access and meeting the Needs of our patients — with a strong focus on improving access to high-quality care.
Spotlight on Clinical Innovation
- Jeffrey Spillane, MD, and Michael Ayers, MD, discussed advances in lung cancer detection and treatment, including the Ion Robotic Bronchoscope.
- Paul Dimond, MD, and John Sunkin, MD, presented robotic-assisted joint replacement using ROSA and Persona IQ technology.
- Ryan Carlson, MD, spoke on robotics in GI surgery.
- Marlene Furment, MD, provided rheumatology updates.
- Miguel Prieto, MD, explored lifestyle medicine, followed by a presentation on the Employee Wellness Program by Darijan Suton.
Midday sessions emphasized restoration and team connection. Staff could choose from yoga, a scavenger hunt, Kindness Rocks painting, floral arranging with Flower Angels or making busy blankets for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients at the Trachsel Neuroscience Institute.
The day concluded with Bridget Torres leading an inspiring session on advocacy, prompting participants to reflect on personal experiences and collaborate in small groups to identify practical ways to integrate advocacy into their daily clinical practice.
Torres says what inspires her the most is watching the MACC teams take what they learn and turn it into action. Through these sessions, they reflected on their own experiences with human connection and explored how to create the same through the C.A.N. pillars.
“They’re not just building skills; they’re building confidence, compassion and a shared commitment to delivering exceptional experiences,” says Torres. “I believe they are lighting the path for others across Cape Cod Healthcare to join in building a culture where outstanding care begins with human connection.”
Ted Calianos, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Falmouth Hospital, opens the summit.
