The one thing that will remain constant for Cape Cod Healthcare in 2021 is change

Embracing Change

By Michael Lauf, president and CEO, Cape Cod Healthcare

In 2021, COVID-19 will be an ongoing issue and have an ongoing presence in our lives. Many people are worried about the policy level or what the pandemic will mean for us in the next few weeks or months. We, at Cape Cod Healthcare, have a responsibility to continue to plan for what’s next – to identify the problems, establish the necessary decisions around them, to weigh the criteria, generate alternatives, evaluate alternatives and ultimately select the best alternative. We must go through the progression and keep striving to get better qualitatively while becoming more efficient in the process.

We must integrate as a system. We now have a new shared electronic medical record (EMR) to help us do that. We need to understand that with less volume, there is an opportunity to do more – to grow and to evolve. This includes growing our physician enterprise and aligning it with a culture of change. We will seek new partnerships and grow strategically, but we must be selective and wise in those decisions. Rationality must rule the day.

I have been asked, “What are we doing badly?” Admittedly, access to primary care has not been going well and recruitment of primary care physicians has been challenging. But we continue to strive to do better. We recently hired a group of high caliber physicians who will be joining us in the coming months, supplementing the high quality physicians we already have in place. We must keep the patient at the center of all we do and create opportunities to just say, “Yes.”

In the spirit of change, we will revisit our vision for Vision 2022 and the patient tower on Cape Cod Hospital’s campus. Where we are now? Which scenario should we pursue? Which trends? Which models? Which priorities?

What lies ahead is our mission to deliver the highest quality, accessible health services which enhance the health of all Cape Cod residents and visitors. It’s our purpose. And with your continued support, we will achieve this purpose. While we may continue to meet roadblocks along the way, we also continue to exceed some expectations. The fun part is that we all have an opportunity to get better, to do better and to be better.
