MullinA Ringleader and Resource

At 91, Med Tech Pat Mullin provides wealth of knowledge

When Pat Mullin moved from Worcester to Falmouth in 1977, she had planned on working part-time as a medical technologist at Falmouth Hospital and cruise into semi-retirement. But the hospital had other plans for Mullin and ended up offering her a full-time position. More than four decades later, the 91-year-old still finds herself sporting a lab coat.

Mullin celebrated her 44th work anniversary on Oct. 3.

The East Falmouth resident, who lives 10 minutes from the hospital, continues to work 16 hours a week and will often pick up a third shift. “This is my home away from home,” says Mullin, who recently departed on a 10-day Viking river cruise along the Rhine from Switzerland to Amsterdam. “It’s a pleasant atmosphere to work. If it wasn’t, I would have been out many years ago. My daughters would like me to retire, but it’s what I enjoy doing.”

Mullin, who has four children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, grew up outside of Worcester and attended the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee, where she studied medical technology. Before coming to the Cape, Mullin ran the medical technologist program at Worcester City Hospital where she trained student medical technologists in all areas of lab and pathology.

As a med tech at Falmouth Hospital, Mullin tests and analyzes blood, body fluids and tissue samples. She is also responsible for analyzing specimens and ensuring tests are completed in an accurate and timely manner. Like everyone on staff, she rotates throughout different departments, from chemistry to hematology. More recently, she learned how to perform COVID testing on new analyzers and has tested countless samples on the front lines of COVID. Mullin says she never feared the disease because med techs are trained to treat any kind of sample. “It’s sort of Med Tech 101 and just a continuation of what we have been doing for years,” says Mullin, who recalls working through the years of Polio.

Over her career, Mullin has built an adoring fan base at the hospital. Her coworkers lovingly describe her as a ringleader when it comes to socializing, a valuable resource, knowledgeable, fun to be around and one to never shy away from anything. “Pat is absolutely phenomenal. It is hard to find words to describe how truly amazing she is, both personally and professionally,” says Hollie Soule. “She is a mentor and a friend, we are all so fortunate to have learned from, and worked with, her over the years. Her dedication to the profession, to the patients, and to her colleagues is heartwarming. She is a very special lady.”
