Take a break on your day off and enjoy some time in nature. Winter on Cape Cod is the perfect time to explore quiet trails on the National Seashore and on town recreation land. Here are five great winter hikes:

  • Fort Hill – Eastham. This loop trail crosses open fields, connects with the Red Maple Swamp Trail and offers spectacular vistas of the Nauset Marsh area. A great location for bird enthusiasts. (1 mi.)
  • Atlantic White Cedar Swamp – Wellfleet. This trail descends through a stunted oak and pine forest into a mature woodland, leads to a boardwalk that winds through the picturesque Atlantic White Cedar Swamp and returns via the historic “Wireless Road” (a sand road) to the starting location. (1.2 mi.)
  • Indian Lands Conservation Area – S. Dennis. Dog-friendly trail features a river and is good for all skill hikers and walkers. Open year-round. (1.3 mi.)
  • Great Island Trail – Wellfleet. Trail follows sandy stretches between the elevated heights of Great Island and Great Beach Hill. Higher elevations punctuate spectacular vistas which emerge from a pitch-pine forest. Other sections skirt salt marsh (3.9-8.8 mi. round trip)
  • Beech Forest Trail – Provincetown. Picturesque beech forest with great bird watching opportunities, especially in spring and fall. Skirts the shallow Beech Forest Pond. (1 mi.)
