10 Questions with Paige Littlefield
The Patient Access Lead for Cape Cod Hospital credits her mother for inspiring her to apply for a position in the department many years ago. Today, Paige is embarking on a new chapter in her life and working toward her longtime dream of becoming a nurse.
As the saying goes, “Like mother, like daughter.”
In some ways, the phrase rings true for Paige Littlefield, who works as a Patient Access Lead at Cape Cod Hospital. Her mother, Noreen Rivers, has worked in the department for more than 40 years.
“She kept encouraging me to apply here, and I just never did,” says Paige. But after working as a CNA at a local nursing home, and later going to cosmetology school to become a hairstylist, Paige eventually took her mother’s advice and applied for a 20-hour position in 2018. “My mom actually trained me when I first started,” says the Barnstable resident. A couple of years later, a full-time position opened up—and Paige jumped at the opportunity.
In her role as Patient Access Lead, Paige works mainly in the Emergency Room, where she helps register patients; provides resources for patients (insurance and financial counselor information); and assists in Referred Outpatient (ROP), which involves registering outpatient appointments, labs, and X-rays. She also occasionally trains new staff and oversees employee workflow. ‘“The hardest part about this job is knowing about all the different types of insurances, especially out of state,” says Paige. “But you learn as you go along.”
Today, the 33-year-old is embarking on a new chapter in her life and working toward her dream of becoming a nurse. She is currently taking prerequisite nursing classes at Cape Cod Community College. “I started taking classes right after high school, but then I dropped out,” says Paige, who says working in the ER for the past several years has inspired her to pursue a nursing degree. “I think it helps to be in school when you’re older; you have life experience, and I think you just care more.”
On a recent December afternoon, we sat down with Paige at the end of her shift—and before she headed off to her Anatomy and Physiology class—to talk about her takeaways from her first job, what she’s putting off at the moment and what a perfect day looks like for her.
1. Quote or phrase you live by?
I have tattoos on the top of my feet that say (left to right), “There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be,” lyrics from “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles. It reminds me that everything happens for a reason. I’ve had it since about 2015.
2. What would be your dream job?
Definitely being a nurse is my end goal. I want to try working in the ER as a nurse because I love the fast-paced environment.
3. What would a perfect day off look like for you?
Sleeping in, for sure. Bringing my dog, Charlie (a nine-year-old field spaniel) on a walk, if the weather is good. I love going to local breweries, including Naukabout, Cape Cod Beer, Bad Martha’s and Tree House.
4. When was your last moment of self-care?
I enjoy having my nails done. I need to go this week!.
5. What was your first job and what was your big takeaway?

6. Is there anything you are putting off at the moment?
Unpacking and laundry. I came back last week from visiting family in Seattle. I went with my mom, sister, niece and nephew for Thanksgiving. I am a big procrastinator when it comes to unpacking and putting clothes away.

“Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney.
