Moms and Babies Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week
Cape Cod Hospital event raises awareness of the many health benefits for mother and child
On Aug. 5, the Lorusso Boardroom at Cape Cod Hospital was transformed into baby education headquarters for a free and informative event celebrating World Breastfeeding Week. The global initiative aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding by raising awareness of its many health benefits for both mother and child.
The two-hour event, organized by hospital lactation consultants Heather Lakatos, BSN, RN, IBCLC, and Diane Robertson, BSN, RN, IBCLC, featured chair massage demonstrations from a licensed massage therapist; a presentation on how to use different infant carriers; healthy snack options and recipes for new moms; discussions about car seat safety and installation; and post-partum stretching and exercises.
The event also featured a physical therapist discussing pelvic PT; staff from the VNA at an “Ask the Pediatrician” table; and WIC Hyannis talking about how to communicate with your infant. “This is our seventh year celebrating World Breastfeeding Week, and we are so happy to hold it in person this year,” said Lakatos at the event.
The Family Birthplace at Cape Cod Hospital hosted a free, fun and informative event for moms and babies on Aug. 5 in the Lorusso Boardroom.
During the presentations, interesting facts and statistics were displayed on the big screen, including “Breastfeeding will get you into shape faster! You can burn from 600 to 1,000 calories per day from breastfeeding” and “Breastfed babies typically get sick less. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of ear infections and stomach problems.”
