From COVID-19 to adoption, CCHC has kept its promise for our future

An Epic Vision for Cape Cod Healthcare

Project Vision Statement

“The Epic system single patient record will enable Cape Cod Healthcare physicians and employees to provide the best possible care to our patients and the community.”

In January 2019, Cape Cod Healthcare announced that Epic would be our new single, integrated health information system. The announcement formally kicked off a multi-year implementation project, with our transition to Epic planned for November 2020.

More than 200 staff and 50 physicians have been involved in evaluating electronic health record (EHR) systems and choosing Epic, with broad support for the Epic platform. Epic was chosen because it was the best solution to support the CCHC vision and system goals, providing an integrated solution that will drive clinical quality improvement, workflow standardization and improved operational efficiency, and support all continuums of care.

As Cape Cod Healthcare prepared for the implementation process, more than 500 clinicians and staff served as subject matter experts, providing critical input into the process, identifying workflow impacts and opportunities for standardization, and indicating the ways the system can support improved quality and care coordination. This work was managed by a robust project team led by CCHC Information Technology Services (ITS), with on-site support from EPIC and Deloitte Consulting.

Then, CCHC employees from across the organization participated a lengthy implementation process. Challenged by the effects of COVID-19 on our organization, the project continued with the intended go-live date of November 1. The success of a project of this magnitude has and continues to rely the support of every person at CCHC.

In a few short days, Cape Cod Healthcare (CCHC) including Cape Cod Hospital, Falmouth Hospital, Medical Affiliates Cape Cod (MACC) physician practices and CCHC outpatient clinics will go-live on the Epic EHR for both clinical and revenue cycle applications.

The new integrated system will replace more than 30 disparate clinical and billing systems, resulting in a single, shared patient record for all patients across CCHC. As part of Vision 2022, Epic is the core of our initiative focused on enhancing our technical infrastructure to support the highest quality of care for patients across Cape Cod and beyond.

Epic is one of the most widely adopted EHRs in the nation, chosen by many leading healthcare systems. It has been demonstrated to support improved care coordination, safety, quality, outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Through this journey, Cape Cod Healthcare has evolved and adapted to new ways of delivering care, while leveraging the best in clinical information technology to provide the best possible care to our community. On November 1, this new technology will enable us to deliver care in a whole new way.
